Vision of the Department

The Department of Applied Earth Sciences at the College of Science, Tikrit University aspires to be a leader in education and applied research in the fields of Earth sciences. The department is committed to preparing graduates with solid scientific knowledge and advanced practical skills, enabling them to contribute to the exploration of natural resources, the management of water and soil, and the mitigation of environmental and geological hazards. The department emphasizes keeping pace with modern developments and employing them to serve society and the labor market.

Furthermore, the department seeks to strengthen its role as a trusted academic and research institution by developing high-quality educational programs and conducting applied studies that support sustainable development plans in Iraq and the region. The department also aims to build national and international scientific partnerships to promote the exchange of expertise, contributing to the protection of natural resources and the achievement of balanced development.

Mission of the Department

The Department of Applied Earth Sciences is dedicated to providing a distinguished academic environment in both theoretical and applied geology. It offers modern educational programs and practical training designed to keep pace with scientific advancements, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate into the labor market and contribute to national development projects.

The department also focuses on conducting applied research that supports the exploration of natural resources and environmental protection, in addition to providing scientific consultations to governmental institutions and the private sector. Furthermore, it seeks to build strong partnerships with universities and research centers locally and internationally, in order to foster the exchange of expertise and strengthen its role in community service and in supporting the objectives of sustainable development.

Objectives of the Department

1. Build a strong theoretical and applied knowledge base through which students acquire a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental sciences within Applied Earth Sciences, and graduate professionals capable of addressing community challenges using rigorous scientific approaches.

2. Prepare qualified geological specialists to meet the needs of petroleum institutions and companies in identifying reservoir formations, estimating reserves in discovered fields, and designing drilling and production programs.

3. Train experts in mineral exploration and prospecting, including identifying the locations of natural resources, calculating their reserves, understanding suitable mining and extraction techniques, as well as studying primary construction materials, determining their reserves, and evaluating their suitability for civil and engineering applications.

4. Prepare professionals for site assessment to determine appropriate locations for engineering structures such as dams and tunnels, and to evaluate the industrial uses of rocks and soils.

5. Develop specialists in groundwater exploration, focusing on drilling methods, optimal utilization, and assessment of strategic reserves and water quality (chemical and physical), while addressing geological problems in industrial, agricultural, and irrigation projects in Salahaddin Province and neighboring regions.

6. Prepare experts in the study of gypsiferous soils and sand dunes, which are prevalent in Salahaddin Province and nearby areas, to design programs and studies aimed at mitigating their negative impacts on civil, engineering, and agricultural structures, as well as addressing related challenges affecting roads and dams.

7. Enhance the quality of the educational process and support scientific research by fostering local, regional, and international partnerships, thereby enabling the College of Science and the Department of Applied Earth Sciences to serve the community, research, and education in Iraq more effectively.

8. Ensure quality management and raise academic standards in both theoretical and practical activities, with the goal of improving faculty performance, graduating students equipped with knowledge and skills, and keeping pace with rapid global advancements in geological sciences.
